Living here in Amarillo practically all my life (since I was 2), I love my city. I know we’ve heard about the good, bad, and ugly stuff about A-Town, but for the most part, I think it’s a great city.
People talk of Amarillo being boring or there’s nothing to do. Some say they want to move to a bigger place. But mainly, that talk is from the younger folks. But I’ve seen where people have moved from Amarillo and have come back. Why? There’s a sense of family here. Even with Amarillo’s population at over 200 thousand people, we all know someone in common. Being here over 40 years, I’ve met a lot of people. Some I consider family. Amarillo has it’s way of growing on you.
Now, to brag about my city. Amarillo is about to make history! According to Kevin Carter, President and CEO of the Amarillo Economic Development Corporation, Amarillo will be “the only city in America with a vet school, a med school and a pharmacy school under one campus.” That’s huge!! The Amarillo EDC is going to fund up to $69 million of the $90 million dollar project. The University plans to enroll its first class by 2021.
Not only that, city officials unveiled a $300 million Civic Center renovation proposal they said would include convention center expansion, a new arena and additional parking. This could get Amarillo what a lot of us want. More concerts from big name artists, more venues, and the money that could boost the economy.
Amarillo may be too laid back and slow for some, but the rest of us, Amarillo is moving forward for all the right reasons.
