How many times have you gone to Texas Motor Speedway and one of the NASCAR racing had it’s race delayed? The first few races at the race track there were delays. I’ll add a day to any race that I go to just in case the race gets delayed just like today’s race at Michigan. That being said today race is scheduled for 4 p.m. our time. I don’t know if this is the latest a race has been postponed before. Imagine what time they’ll get out of the track and how much sleep you’ll get if you have an early flight.
The reason for the delay is to make sure all the rain has drained off and the race track is dry. Plus, all the bad weather should be long gone. Texas isn’t the only place I’ve seen a delay or seen the race called past the halfway point because of rain. I’ve seen delays at Daytona and saw a winner declared at Phoenix.
After the winner was declared in Phoenix that’s when I started adding a day to my race going. I don’t know what flights look like now but back then there were no flights headed east from Las Vegas until the afternoon. We got stuck in Vegas after the Phoenix race after making our flight after being assured we’d be able to get home when we caught our flight.
When we got to Vegas we were checking the board looking for our flight to Amarillo. Amarillo was not on the board so we went up to the counter. The ticket taker said “you’re the three guys we were looking for, your flight left 15 minutes ago.” They put us in a hotel near the airport. You’d think being stuck in Vegas is great. Most casinos you have to walk through or close to the gaming area to get to your room. Not the place they stuck us in. You walked through a deli that had three video poker games. When you spend your money at the race track you don’t expect to stay longer in Vegas then your lay over. I had maybe a $80 on me. I love craps. I figured it would cost $20 to get to the strip and $20 back leaving me with $40 to gamble with. If you know craps $40 could be gone in five minutes. I decided to just stay put.
One of my tricks to any trip is to leave a $20 bill in the glove box so I can get out of paid parking.
The race at Texas my driver back then was Dale Jarrett and he was blowing away the competition. We were on the back stretch and his car came by and all you could hear was a swishing sound. I let out an expletive because I knew his car had run out of gas. The Yates cars were among some on the loudest cars on the track. Back then drivers raced back to the finish line to get their laps back. Later in the race Tony Stewart didn’t let Jarrett get his lap back and I knew that would cost him later in the race. When he was racing towards the front Jarrett wouldn’t let Stewart get by him.
Yesterday during the rain delay Bubba Wallace and Corey Lajoie played catch with a football with some of the fans.
