What? There’s no law against eating dogs and cats? Apparently so, the only states where it’s illegal to eat dogs and cats are California, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, New York, and Virginia.
The House of Representatives passed a bill yesterday that outlaws the slaughter, transportation, sale, and possession of dogs and cats for consumption. Florida Republican Vern Buchanan, one of the sponsors of the bill, says it’s aimed at the 44 states that don’t have laws making it illegal to eat dogs and cats. Violators would be fined up to $5,000.
The other sponsor of the bill, Florida Democrat Alcee Hastings, says the House voted to unify animal cruelty laws across the country.
The bill now goes to the Senate. Buchanan said he is optimistic the Senate will pass the Dog and Cat Meal Trade Prohibition Act before Congress adjourns later this fall.
