My First Country Concert Was

Most of us can remember our first concert. My very first concert, my sister took me to the Amarillo Civic Center to see the punk rock group, The Clash. Yep, that’s right…The Clash, the guys that sing “Should I stay or should I go,” “London Calling,” and “Rock the Casbah.”

It was quite the experience. It was the first time I’d seen a mosh pit. At first, I thought people were starting a fight, only to find out that wasn’t the case. That concert was definitely memorable.

But what I’ll never forget was my very first country concert. It was Garth Brooks in 1996. I didn’t know what to expect from a country concert. I’ve seen concerts from Huey Lewis and the News, Heart, Pat Benatar, KISS,  Motley Crue, and Whitney Houston, but never a country artist.

I was lucky enough to go back stage and meet Garth before the concert. He didn’t come to us dressed up in those tight fitting jeans and button down shirt either. He came to us in a basketball jersey and shorts. He introduced himself and then apologized. I’ll forget the next few minutes after that.

He said, “I apologize for looking like this. You have no idea how tight my jeans can be.” Without hesitation, I said, “you wanna bet.” Now just imagine my heart started to pound a little after saying that, because I thought I said those words in my head, but I didn’t. I said it loud. Loud enough for Garth to swing around and look directly at me.

What happened next is something I will always remember. Garth smiled real big, hugged me, kissed my forehead and said, “I like you.”

I’ve been hooked ever since. Who did you see at your first country concert?
