There’s been a parking bust in Boston. The only person with access to seven new smart meters is alleged to have stolen over $1,300 in quarters back in 2017. Derek Paradis, the head parking technician, was arraigned for larceny of over $250 by a single scheme on Wednesday in Chelsea District Court. His arrest was part of a widespread investigation into the disappearance of $90,000 in parking money. During the two months of the trial run for the smart meters it was calculated the meters took in $1,377. That money never deposited to the city’s treasurer’s office.
Once when I was in Atlanta headed to the Georgia Dome for an Alabama concert we were walking to the stadium and a guy was beating the heck out of a parking meter with a crowbar. He told us not to worry that he was only taking what he needed. After the concert we caught a cab back to the hotel. The next day I went to Richard Petty’s last NASCAR race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The temps were in the 60’s and I was wearing a t-shirt. most of the people there were wearing jackets & hoodies with the hood tied up to where you could only see their eyes. They thought the 60’s were cold. Here’s this crazy guy just wearing a t-shirt. That race also just happened to be Jeff Gordon’s first NASCAR race. Who knew?
I wonder if it’s the same type of meters that are in our downtown area. You can park downtown for just a dollar an hour by using the ParkMobile App with a limit of three hours. If there’s an event at the civic center or say Hodgetown time can modified for the entire paid parking area for the duration of that event. The app will ask you to create an account, provide a payment method and you can register up to five vehicle license plates.
