SCOTUS Decision On Repeal Of Obamacare Could Be Months Away

A Supreme Court ruling on the possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act could be months away. Justices questioned lawyers on both sides of the issue during virtual oral arguments. Republican litigants argued that the landmark healthcare law is unconstitutional. Those defending the healthcare law warned that a repeal would end health insurance coverage for more than 20 million Americans, including protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Supreme Court justices normally release a flood of rulings before ending the high court’s term in late June.

The key issue involves whether mandating health insurance coverage is constitutional since there is no longer a penalty for not buying insurance. That was known as the individual mandate, which was repealed by the Republican-led House and Senate in 2017. The healthcare law, which is also known as Obamacare, is ten-years old. There is now a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court after the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett, one week before the presidential election.
