Potter County Commissioners learned on Monday that the Potter County Jail is way past capacity at double the state-wide average of 96 % occupancy..

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards say at 80% capacity, they recommend expanding to a new facility. At 85%, jail standards can shut the jail down.

Scott Giles, Chief Deputy at Potter County Sheriff’s Office told Commissioners,

“Once you get above the 90% mark, you really are too full and that’s where we are.

The Potter County Commissioner’s Court will continue to meet until they have a plan to assist in the overcrowding.

The County Commissioners plan on convening a panel to talk about long and short-range goals to take care of the jail overcrowding problem.
