Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials are crediting a young corrections officer for thwarting an attempted escape from the Roach Unit in Childress at 4:15 Tuesday morning.

The TDCJ issued a news release that notes 35-year-old Andrew Franklin tried to escape shortly after eating breakfast, made a run toward the perimeter fencing and started to climb. That’s when 24-year-old Cody Cabler spotted the inmate.

Cabler fired a single shot from his weapon, ending the escape attempt. No one was struck by the fired round. Cabler has been a correctional officer for 44 months.

Franklin has been incarcerated since 2007 on two 50-year sentences for possession of cocaine with intent to deliver and manufacturing/delivery of a controlled substance. Both charges are out of Lubbock County.

Felony attempted escape charges are pending.
